I am Olia Balabina, an AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) accredited professional photographer based in Canberra. I am a people person and most of my commissioned work is about drawing out and capturing the essence of people - whether it be creatively, in a corporate portrait, on their wedding day or with their family.
I am very passionate about photography and capturing the joyous moments life has to offer. I have a Certificate IV and a Diploma in Photography from Canberra Institute of Technology. I am fully equipped and have all the necessary gear to take that perfect photo. I am very experienced in professional studio lighting, set ups, and advanced retouching techniques in Photoshop.
My work has been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, the Canberra Times and the Queanbeyan Age Chronicle. I have been featured at 5 exhibitions - at the High Court of Australia, the Canberra Institute of Technology and at the Indonesian Institute of Arts. If you you would like to know more details about my projects and awards please see the "Fact Sheet" page.
My little secret
I wasn't always a photographer - I spent nearly 9 years in marketing and finance. I always wanted to do something more creative than sitting at a desk and to have the freedom of working for myself. Photography has always been a part of my life. My grandfather and my father both were hobby photographers and we had a dark room set up in our apartment in Moscow where they would do their magic - processing film.
Migrating to Australia from Russia in 2014 has changed my life forever. I spent a couple of years in hospitality while I was studying photography in Canberra and setting up my own photography business. Eventually, I made it and became a professional full-time photographer and business owner. It feels like my dreams have come true. I encourage everyone to follow their passions, believe in themselves, learn from the best and turn negatives into positives!
My personal touch
I find it very important to listen to my clients and understand the style they want. Most of my customers prefer a mix of photojournalistic and traditional-timeless styles with a creative twist. I capture joyous candid moments and also more traditional posed shots for family albums and frames. If I am taking photos at events like weddings and birthday parties, I capture environmental shots as well as photos of the ceremony and guests to tell your story in detail.
